Emily Heumann 3rd Place Winner College & Young Professional Opera Competition 2019
My participation in the 2019 St. Petersburg Opera Guild Competition was a wonderful opportunity. As a young artist, it is important for me to participate in competitions and auditions like yours. Through these events, young singers are introduced to musical communities and also receive valuable feedback from industry experts. Winning prize money is very important to a young artist, as a career in opera is very expensive. We are expected to fund continuing education in voice study and coaching, fund our own audition tours, pay for travel and hire our own pianists. The competiton itself was very organized and welcoming, and I would highly recommend it to any other young artist in the future.
This competition was definitely a stepping stone for me. Since your competition in 2019, I sang the role of Mrs. Noah in “Noye’s Fludde” with the Opera Orlando Youth Company and the role of Cherubino in “Le nozze de Figaro” with Opera Orlando. I participated in the program “Harmony: Tolerance and Acceptance” at the St. Petersburg Opera, and I sang The Fox in “The Little Prince” at First Coast Opera. Your prize money directly funded my career, and I am so thankful!
